[PLEASE CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO VIEW ON BLACK] This was shot on one of my previous visits to Antarctica, and it shows exactly what I love about it so much - spectacular landscapes and extremely relaxed wildlife. The person standing there in fashionable red is my friend Frieda, a German biologist and geologist. In my work I like to use people and animals as small parts of a large landscape, and this was the perfect setting for it. The weather that day could not have been better - overcast. The moment the sun comes out, you have to deal with very bright snow and very contrasty penguins. Preventing the highlights from blowing out essentially means severely underexposing the dark parts of the penguin. Also, I personally think that the cloudy weather fits the Antarctic landscape much better. The penguins you see here are Gentoo, one of the many different species you can see on the continent. They're very funny to watch and can make a lot of noise. There were many thousands at this landing spot, and the beautiful backdrop makes it one of my favourite places. The bright red jackets (I was wearing one as well) have a very serious reason; if a blizzard starts, the brighter the colour you're wearing, the easier it will be for the rescue team to find you. - - - If you're interested in joining us later this year on a landscape and wildlife photography trip of a lifetime, please check out my website for more pictures, a tour impression video clip, and a detailed PDF: Squiver Photo Tours & Workshops Hope to see you there!
