Olympus OMD EM5 MKII by Emmo

MY REVIEW OF THE OLYMPUS OMD EM5 MKII I have just returned from Prague and trying the new OMD EM5 MKII at the Olympus launch event. As a result i thought i would let you all know my personal thoughts. I currently own the EM5 MK1 and EM1. The thing i love about Olympus as a company, they Listen , Learn and Innovate . All of these things for me can be found on this new camera. It has some items that should in my view have been standard on the OMD range from the start. A multi direction rear screen (which comes into its own for video use), big chunky well machined dials , that do not feel like they will fall off (like some did on the MK1) , and a eye cup that stays in place after you walk up a mountain and back (i lost three on the MK1 and now have it glued and taped in place). And a lock button on the Programme dial. Without doubt Olympus have listened and learned and implemented these simple but necessary changes. The camera top plate has a complete redesign, and it shows the development of the camera for the needs of the user. The programme dial is now on the left side , and prevents the accidentally pressing of function buttons that can happen on the EM1 when holding and working in portrait orientation. The on/off switch is now alongside this dial and larger and easier to use. I like the position, but street photographers might be disappointed that they cannot turn the camera on/off with one hand and they walk around. More programmable buttons are available than the MK1 and this is a welcome addition. My first purchase of a Olympus was the PEN EP1 , i was new to photography and was drawn to it my its looks , retro and cool. I feel very much the same about the new MKII EM5 , i love it in silver and the look just rocks , it is so different from what is out there and it invites comments from other people as you walk around. I like a item that looks cool, as well as delivering what you need , the MK11 does this hands down. Even the EVF top housing has been redesigned and is sharper in its angles , like the original OM series. The camera looks hot , feels great in the hand. Helped by the improved body style with moulded front grip and large thumb support. The advanced ‘In camera stabilisation’ is just awesome, without going into loads of technical detail, it gives you the user the ability to take shots handheld in very low light conditions. Stick a fast prime on this baby and just watch it rock. The camera has some major innovations included, a ability to merge a number of shots (tripod needed) into one ‘high res shot’ . A setting to take a number of short rapid timed shots that again merge into one , for use when doing light painting (not my thing at all) , but greatly reduces the noise element associated with this work. And major advances in the video recording. To be honest this is not my area of interest or understanding. BUT i watched and was involved at the workshop in making a video , and i could clearly see how the advances in the quality and the ‘in camera stabilisation’ , take this camera to a whole new level within the OMD range. If you are currently a EM5 MK1 or OMD10 user , would i recommend a upgrading , yes i would hands down , this is a great camera with well thought up updates and features that again innovate within the camera industry.
